UNITED STATES Flag Day, A day to reflect on our rich heritage, a brief history
It was this day, in 1777 that President George Washington accepted the first flag, created by Betsy Ross, as the official flag of the new United States of America. This first flag, featured 13 stars in a circle, representing the original 13 states
Scholars debate if Betsy Ross in fact did create the first official flag, but they all agree she was asked by President Georgia Washington to sew a flag, and she was a seamstress from Philadelphia.
On June 14th, 1777 the Continental Congress "Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."
Since that time, there have been 27 different flags and all across America we display "ole Glory" with 13 red & white stripes and 50 stars to represent all 50 states.
In 1916 Woodrow Wilson established today as National Flag Day, as many local communities were already celebrating, with much pride, flag day as a holiday. In 1949, President Harry Truman signed legislation that made today the official Flag Day and further required every president to issue a flag day proclamation. However, it is not an official Federal Holiday.
Regardless of where you stand with politics, your view on the current government or any other issue, remember this is the greatest country in the world. This country is great because of the pride we have for our country and for each other. Our flag represents freedom for all, across the world and is viewed as a symbol of hope and prosperity to many people.
Today especially, but every day, display your pride and show your patriotism and remember that the Red represents Valor and Bravery, the White, Purity and Innocence, and the Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance, and Justice. The freedoms we enjoy have come at a cost, as freedom is not free.
