"To Tell the Truth" is an American television game show created by Bob Stewart and produced by Goodson- Todman Productions that has aired intermittently in various forms since 1956 on both networks and in syndication. It is one of three game shows in the United States to have aired at least one new episode in at least six consecutive decades. A total of 25 seasons of the various versions of To Tell the Truth have been produced.
The show challenged a panel of four celebrities to correctly identify a described contestant who typically had an unusual occupation or experience. This central character was joined by two imposters who pretended to be that central character. The celebrity panelists questioned the team of challengers, with the imposters allowed to lie, but the central character sworn "to tell the truth".
Considering the political climate that the we find ourselves in, it seems as if we have been playing “To Tell the Truth”. We have allowed professional politicians to make claims, debate one another, use talking points with no factual basis and then we, the panel, have been asked to pick the person who is “telling the truth” and to vote for them.
We have been asked to “trust” them and to elect them to public office; many of them for the umpteenth time. Once elected they quickly forget their promises and go back to doing what Washington does best, further complicating our lives.
It is time to play a real game of “To Tell the Truth”. We, as a people, should be compelled to ask questions of our candidates that are based on the facts. We should confront the lies and expose those who tell them. We should vote out any person who uses race baiting or any other divisive tactic to make a point, or who consider civil disobedience as unpatriotic.
Truth is a fact that has been verified. The truth is neither right nor left. It is a code of behavior and code of behavior should be expected from all people who want to serve for the better good of the American people.
The political system as it has developed; pits the government against the people; the right against the left. The government was originally formed to unite the people in common causes that affect us all, and to uphold the Constitution as it was given to us, we the people, by our countries founding fathers. We have allowed politicians to polarize the electorate and use every tactic, including race baiting, and lying to get their way.
When was the last time that you know that the representatives that you elected to office actually cared about what you have to say? Have they treated you as if they were elected to serve you, or have they treated you as if they “know” better than you what is good for you. Have you received one of those form letters that say absolutely nothing when you contact your Senator or Congressman on an issue that is important to you?
Have you ever wondered why most politicians in Washington are lawyers? Only lawyers can write bills that are thousands of pages long and no one knows what is written in the law. How many of those pages actually have something to do with the legislation, or is it mostly pork and bribes and little substance?
Have you ever wondered why Washington is so quick write new laws when a crisis arises? If the politicians had been “minding the hen house” as we elected them to do, there would be no need for thousand page bills to fix problems that never should have happened in the first place.
It is time to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions, voting record, their moral code, their ties to special interests, and their adherence to the fundamentals of the Constitution.
It is time to play “To Tell the Truth” and to identify the imposters and vote in the real citizen representatives who actually care what we think and need.
College student Betsy Clark (sp?) and two imposters try to fool the panel about which one of them swims in a water show with Willy the Whale. This was episode #1084, and was taped on Aug. 4, 1966.
