The past 16 months has been an extraordinary journey for Steve and me. Unfortunately, this particular journey now comes to an end. With virtually all of the votes counted, we are about 2,400 votes short. With some absentee ballots and the overseas military votes yet to be counted, we certainly have the option of requesting the automatic statewide recount. But we are not going to do that. I've talked with Nathan today to congratulate him on being our party's nominee.
There are so many people to thank. The campaign team is one exceptional group of individuals who put their lives on hold for this effort. The grassroots leadership team across the state put in hours upon hours of their time and invested their hard work on behalf of this campaign. I appreciate the support of those elected officials who were willing to go against conventional wisdom and support this underdog campaign. And, to you, I offer my heartfelt gratitude for your support and confidence.
Now, my friends, we must move forward and unite. Throughout this tough campaign, Nathan and I were competitors – never enemies. The real enemy is Roy Barnes. And, to defeat him in November, our nominee will need your help. It is with this in mind that I call on all of you to give Nathan your support and energy in the months ahead.
I have dealt with a lot in my life, and my faith and friends have always seen me through, and these two constants– along with my incredible husband Steve – will do the same again. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you and not to harm, plans to give you hope and a future …" (Jeremiah 29:11) And so, it with His words in our hearts that Steve and I look to the future with confidence and certainty for all that He has awaiting us. Your friendships have so enriched our lives, and for that, we are grateful.
