Rasmussen: Deal Lead Over Barnes Expands

A Rasmussen Reports poll out today shows Republican Nathan Deal widening his lead over Democrat Roy Barnes, 51-42.

"For five months in a row, Rasmussen has shown Nathan Deal with significant leads over Democrat Roy Barnes, and the lead is expanding now that Nathan Deal is the Republican nominee for governor," said Deal spokesman Brian Robinson. "Georgia voters are tired of the big spending, big debt, big government policies and promises of Democrats. They're looking for a conservative antidote to the Obama administration, not more of the same. Georgians want lower taxes to attract new jobs and get our economy humming again. That's what Nathan Deal's Real Prosperity plan will bring our state. Roy Barnes has recklessly promised billions in new spending that we can't afford. Roy Barnes' tax hikes would choke off any chance we have of adding jobs in Georgia."

"Republicans seem to have come together quickly following Deal's 50.2% to 49.8% runoff win this week over Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, who quickly endorsed the victor." - Rasmussen

Last month, Deal enjoyed a 49-43 percent lead over Barnes.

"Roy Barnes continues to lose ground to Nathan Deal," Robinson said. "Let's put this in context: Roy Barnes has spent a gazillion dollars on positive ads, completed a statewide Apology Tour and waltzed through his primary against poorly funded opponents. Meanwhile, Nathan Deal has weathered a bruising primary runoff battle to win his nomination. That's bad news for Roy Barnes. Even in his finest seersucker suit, he's sweating it. That's why he's already repeating false attacks against Nathan Deal."

The poll, described here, shows that more voters view Roy unfavorably than view him favorably. It further shows that Nathan Deal, in contrast, has a positive favorable/unfavorable rating.

From Rasmussen:

"Republicans seem to have come together quickly following Deal's 50.2% to 49.8% runoff win this week over Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, who quickly endorsed the victor. Deal earns 92% support from Republicans in the state. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Georgia Democrats back Barnes. Voters not affiliated with either major party prefer the Republican by a 56% to 33% margin.

"Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Georgia voters view Deal as an ideological conservative. As for Barnes, 40% think he's a liberal, while 31% say he's moderate and 24% a conservative."
