Georgia's House Speaker Discusses What's Happening Under the Gold Dome

David Ralston

David Ralston was born in Ellijay, Georgia where he graduated from Gilmer County High School. He went on to attend Young Harris College and North Georgia College and State University earning his bachelor’s degree. He later received a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.

In 1992, Ralston was elected to the Georgia State Senate and served until 1998 when he won the Republican nomination for Attorney General of Georgia. In 2002, Ralston was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. Today, he represents the 7th District which includes Fannin and Gilmer counties and a portion of Dawson County.

As a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Speaker Ralston chaired the House Judiciary Non-Civil committee, was vice-chair of the Judiciary committee, and also served on the Appropriations, Rules, Transportation, and Governmental Affairs committees.

On January 11, 2010, Ralston was elected the 73rd Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Aside from his legislative duties, he is an attorney in Blue Ridge. His civic duties include active participation with the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce, Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, and the Blue Ridge Lions Club.

He and his wife Jane have two children, Elizabeth and Matt.
