With the average price of electricity about 9.5¢, replacing a 100W bulb saves only 7/10 of a cent per hour, but it adds up. In the 1000 hours it takes to burn out a regular bulb, that's $7.00.
CFLs work just like regular bulbs: instant on, same color, no hum, same size. CFLs has two big advantages: they can't burn you and you replace them much less often. (Well, OK, some are a bit too big, and some (GE) take a few minutes to get to full brightness--but not TCP bulbs.)
