(Buford, Georgia) - Laurie Sossa, president of Southern Barter Club (SBC), believes in a quote from John D. Rockerfeller: “The secret to success is to do the common things uncommonly well.”
“This is something I strive for every day with my family, community, and in our commitment to our members,” she adds.
Indeed, Laurie took the simple and common idea of trading and bartering to a whole new level.
“In this economic climate, many businesses are struggling and our goal has been to awareness to organized bartering so that we could aid businesses in surviving and even thriving,” she explains.
She was a member of several trade exchanges before starting SBC and was a founder of the Georgia Barter Alliance. Laurie took the initiative to approach a few other barter companies in Georgia to expand trading opportunities locally.
“In this economic climate, many businesses are struggling and our goal has been to awareness to organized bartering so that we could aid businesses in surviving and even thriving,” she explains.
It’s an idea that took off quickly. The business was nominated for the 2010 Best of Gwinnett for Best Barter Club.
Her organization includes small business owners, large and small corporations, service providers, and others with goods or services they are willing to exchange. The idea is a simple one. For example, an owner of a website design company could earn trade dollars for providing his service to a restaurant; and then he can spend the currency on advertising, or having a roof replaced. The possibilities are endless.
Laurie applies the same philosophy of doing “common things uncommonly well” to family life as well. Married for 24 years with two young daughters, Laurie enjoys spending her free time outdoors with her family, watching old movies, traveling, and cooking.
Her hope for 2011 is for members of her barter club to find the same success and blessings she has enjoyed.
“Their success is our success,” she notes.
